blog "gadgets" update

there is a search feature on the right side of the blog that allows you to search google without having to navigate away from the site, because i know you love it so much.

this is one way to generate ad revenue, but i have also added ads to my blog.  i apologize if this is annoying - feedback is appreciated.

however, this way i can make a little extra spending money.... or can i? this is more of an experiment.

so if you feel generous, or have some extra time, just click on an ad or two to donate to my fund.

gründercamp: update

cooking in oslo on a budget...

norwegian people think my recipes are strange... i'm sorry if i take traditional norwegian ingredients and add flavors to make them more tasty... or tasty at all.... see for yourself:

roast beef tacos on "lomper" with tomatoes, green onions, cottage cheese and secret aardvark hot sauce (i'm going to need a refill soon).

a more traditional meal with a twist: norwegian steak with a balsamic red onion relish, twice cooked garlic potatoes, and a greek salad.

norwegian salmon and crawfish with feta couscous, cucumbers and sweet chili drizzle.

jarlsberg Sliders: 1 with guacamole and the other tomato, grilled onions,  and lettuce.  and, of course, ringnes norwegian beer.

norwegian salmon and crawfish green curry, with egg noodles, green onions, peas and parsley.

half pound jarls-burger with guacamole, the regular fix-ins and fresh red chilis (which are not spicy at all, I desperately need to find fresh jalapeños, but the canned ones will have to do for now)

teriyaki norwegian salmon with peas, broccoli and soft-boiled eggs over feta couscous... and sweet chili drizzle for good measure.

pineapple green curry norwegian salmon, shrimp and crawfish over couscous... with broccoli and roasted nuts.

as you can see, seafood is a cheap and delicious staple, as is green curry (not very norwegian).  i will get tired of green curry, but not of the seafood, so expect more varieties soon.

gründercamp and norway's most valuable man

on thursday of last week (23 sept.), i participated in an entrepreneurial competition called gründercamp.  it was hosted by ferd, an investment/holdings group and also one of the largest in norway.  coincidentally, the ceo, johan h. andresen, is one of the wealthiest people in norway -- he is actually considered to have the highest personal net-worth of anyone in norway!

...but that's not the cool part...

the idea of the "entrepreneur camp" is that we are given an industry and 24 hours to come up with a business plan.  ferd wanted us to come up with an idea for social-entrepreneurship (basically a non-profit that actually makes money) that focused on children.  we were put in random groups and sent to work...

now we're getting to the cool part....

aside from presenting a business plan, we had to give a 3-minute presentation.  with only 3 minutes, it would be tough to have more than one presenter, so i -- stupidly or geniusly (?) -- elected to give the presentation.

hmm... a 3-minute presentation in front of the most valuable man in norway..... and I've only been here for a little over a month... nervous?  

but it went well, of course... after all, mr. andresen said it was "catchy and compelling" ("de hadde i tillegg en catchy og overbevisende presentasjon, sa johan h. andresen").  sweet.

but even better?  we won!  our idea, peoplelikeme, was/is a "group counseling social club" to help kids of divorced parents, which is a growing problem in norway.

supposedly there is a ski lift that takes you to the top to cycle down.... but i guess it was a bit late in the summer so we had to ride up...  still some great trails and cool pics.

... but it is also one of the dopest bars in oslo.  it is the bar attached to the palace grill and is located in the posh solliplas neighborhood.  

under the neon palace grill sign reads: "rhythm & booze" :)

the best part of skaugum, however, is the multi-level, enclosed courtyard in the back with terraces and an extra bar.  they always have a dj playing loungy-but-not-too-loungy house music.

ceramic bowls cover the wall across from the highest terrace.

... just watch out - there may be one or two douchebags lurking, or, in this case, fully exposed...
